Causes Of Acne And How To Treat Them

In the past, people believed that acne only appear in teenagers and that they are caused by lack of hygiene. But today we know that there are plenty of reasons for acne to occur, and that they can hit different generations. In case you have acne, it is important to understand what causes them, so you can determine the appropriate treatment.

What causes acne?

The belief that lack of hygiene causes acne is long behind us. As a matter of fact, you can even do worse in acne treatment if you wash your skin excessively. What causes acneAcne can appear for many reasons, and among the most common ones are: change in hormone levels, heavy sweating and using certain medications.

Hormonal changes occur in puberty, which is when most people start having problems with acne. For women, these changes occur around monthly period, or as a consequence of using progesterone-only contraceptive pills. When it comes to sweating, it is common for acne to appear if you generally sweat a lot. Also, it is more common under tight pieces of clothing such as headbands, collars and so on. Medications such as steroid creams and phenytoin are also common causes of acne. Some bodybuilders take anabolic steroids (although they are illegal), and they can also be a cause of acne.

Treating acne with topical creams

Topical creams exist in various preparations and combinations. They can be very efficient in treating acne, from mild to moderate severity. Some topical creams are even efficient in treating severe acne.

They mainly consist of benzoyl peroxide, retinoids, antibiotics or azelaic acid. There are creams with only one of these ingredients, but you can also find combinations, such as benzoyl peroxide or retinoid with antibiotic. The combined creams tend to work better for severe acne, because they deal with all the symptoms – inflammation, bacteria and clogged pores.

Some cases of acne require treatment with pills. These are mainly severe cases, when topical cream cannot help on its own. In such cases, usually antibiotic pills are prescribed for acne treatment. Women can get combined contraceptive pills for acne treatment in case the cause of acne is hormonal. In both cases, the pills are not very effective in unclogging the pores. Therefore, the therapy can be combined with topical creams that help you get rid of blackheads and whiteheads along with redness and inflammation.
